Since their debut in 2022, Sydney’s LAHGO have been building for themselves a reputation – a strong one at that – for creating music that blends a core love of rock n’ roll with elements of soul and pop music, with fresh perspectives and takes on the genre. Returning with their first hit of new music for 2025 in the simply titled, ‘SHE’, LAHGO serve up a prime example of the music still to come; it’s set to be an exciting year ahead.

A track that the band describes as being about “the challenging roles of what a woman should do in the context of a romantic relationship”, ‘She’ is emotionally charged and vividly engaging. LAHGO’s music has drawn comparisons to a range of influences as varied as Arctic Monkeys, Lola Young, Hiatus Kaiyote and Lime Cordiale – yet with the release of ‘She’, we see the four-piece branch further out into a lane of their own.

Says lead vocalist Mel Bailey, ‘She’ questions, “Who’s the breadwinner? Who should stay home? Do we even have to have these conventions in society anymore? Being made to feel guilty or inadequate about my role in a romantic relationship, I was forced to question the whole relationship in general. And lyrically, this comes across in my line, “Well if you’re mine, Then I don’t mind, ‘cause I’ll be all you wanted in time”. At the end of the day, as long as you love and respect me for the person I am, that’s all that really matters.”

‘She’ was recorded at A Sharp Recording Studio in Sydney with engineer Matt Fioravanti (Tasman Keith, Agung Mango) on producing, mixing and mastering. Developed from a melody that bassist Lee Denman conjured one night after recording the band’s 2024 single ‘Changing’, ‘She’ was beautifully fleshed out in these sessions with Bailey, then completed by the full band.

“I found myself in a heightened state of creativity after returning home from a 14 hour day recording ‘Changing’. Laying in bed restlessly around 2am, I had a melody in my head that I couldn’t shake and, probably to the annoyance of my next door neighbours at the time, proceeded to get up and start working out the bones of the track. It started out as a keys and vocals song only, with a strong melody, but lacking lyrically…Once I got into the room with Mel, she really brought the song to life.”

Released alongside the single is a music video, featuring a hilariously dramatic wedding scene directed by filmmaker Patrick James Verlin.

“The director, Patrick James Verlin (originally from Melbourne and now based in London), flew from London to make this happen with us in Sydney, and the entire team poured so much into this project.” LAHGO
